Junior Geotechnical Engineer

We are in the hunt to fill a contract Junior Geotechnical Engineer (Remote Work) Job in Fort McMurray, AB. The ideal candidate will be local to Fort McMurray, with a degree in geotechnical/civil engineering. The Geotechnical Engineer will be responsible for monitoring, approving and verifying construction of earthen structures and overburden dumps to ensure specifications of the designs are being met by field Operations through visual inspection, field testing and sampling.

Junior Geotechnical Engineer Job Responsibilities:
• Check the quality of fill materials and frost content and approve suitability of material based on the specifications of the structures issued by the Design / Facility Engineer.
• Assess and approve lift heights during placement and identify clean-up required based on the structure specification provided by the Design /Facility Engineer.
• Collect samples of fill materials used for construction or at base of cleanup zone(s), whenever required for testing and visual inspection.
• Check sand sources and stockpile location(s) and provide samples to soils lab for grain size and permeability testing.
• Perform density testing of compacted fills with Troxler nuclear densometer.
• Frequent interaction with surveyors, operators, field leadership, mine planners and Design/Facility Engineers, to understand and report on construction and request or confirm stakes.
• Daily mine tours
• Daily ore grade calculations and ore reports
• Estimating ore grade and ore quality control at operating shovel faces
• Delineating ore/waste boundaries in shovel pits
• Attending daily meetings and communicating with Mining Engineers, Planners and Operations personnel
• Advise on geological recommendations to maintain desired ore blend
• Provide support to bitumen recovery investigations

Junior Geotechnical Engineer Job Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical, Civil or Geological Engineering
• Must be eligible for registration with APEGA as an E.I.T. or P. Eng. in Canada
• 1-3 years of geotechnical experience
• Must be able and willing to operate a motor vehicle with a Class 5 Driver’s license or equivalent in a mine environment
• Oil sands and/or mining experience preferred
• Experience conducting geotechnical lab testing in a soils lab is considered an asset
• Experience using MicroStation or equivalent Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) program is an asset
• Ability to communicate effectively to both office and field personnel, along with strong attention to detail, is considered a must
• Prior exposure to Microstation and dispatch software (Wenco) is preferred
• MS office programs, in particular, Excel, being essential.
